4 Trails Ultra Loop, also known as 4TUL was founded in 2020. This 189km loop starts and ends at Tai Mo Shan, with 95% of the route falling within Hong Kong's four major trails: the MacLehose Trail, Wilson Trail, Hong Kong Trail, and Lantau Trail. The loop is connected by public transportation and the sections to be completed on foot cover 146km.

1. 4TUL background
4TUL originated from a personal challenge in 2020. The "4T" refers to four major mountain trails in Hong Kong: the MacLehose Trail, Lantau Trail, Hong Kong Trail, and Wilson Trail. The Ultra Loop "UL" circuit starts and finishes at Tai Mo Shan.
•The 1st edition was an individual challenge for each runner.
•The 2nd and 3rd editions were held as virtual races.
•The 4th edition was a physical race held in March 2024.
•The 5th edition continues the tradition of having no ribbon markings on the race courses. Participants must download the GPX file provided by the organiser for navigation. Although over 95% of the route covers the four trails, participants are highly encouraged to conduct a recce beforehand to familiarise themselves with the terrain.
2. Unique features
A distinctive aspect of 4TUL is that participants need a coordinated strategy that combines athleticism with resourceful planning to choose the start time for them from the following: 6:50am, 7:20am, 7:50am, or 8:20am. All participants must complete the first 26km section from Tai Mo Shan Rotary Park to Tuen Mun Pier, then take the 10:50am ferry from Tuen Mun Pier to Tai O Pier. Failure to board the 10:50am ferry will result in a DNF (Did Not Finish).
3. Time limit
The time limit for each category is based on the official start time of 7:50am. However, the actual finish time for participants will be based on their chosen start time.
The rule regarding the time limit for each category being based on the official start time of 7:50 AM, despite there being multiple starting times, is designed to ensure flexibility for all participants. This structure allows runners to select a start time that best suits their pace and strategy, ensuring they can reach the Tuen Mun Pier in time for the 10:50am ferry. By offering multiple start times, the race accommodates runners of varying speeds and confidence levels. Slower runners or those less confident in their pace can opt for an earlier start, while faster, more confident runners can choose a later start time.
The key point is that while the time limit is standardised, the actual finish time for each participant is calculated based on their individual start time. This means everyone has an equal opportunity to perform at their best. Additionally, since all participants must take the same ferry, everyone begins the section from Tai O at the same time, ensuring a fair and synchronised continuation of the race. This rule balances flexibility with fairness, allowing each runner to compete on equal footing regardless of their chosen start time.
4. Public transport requirements
Participants must use the following public transport between sections:
•Section 1 to Section 2: Tuen Mun Pier to Tai O Pier via CKS Fortune Ferry.
•Section 2 to Section 3: Mui Wo Pier to Central Pier via Sun Ferry.
•Section 3 to Section 4: Tai Koo to Lam Tin by MTR* (applicable to One Go participants only) or the shuttle bus provided by the organiser.
*One Go participants must take the MTR to cross the harbour. The last train of the day departs at 00:43am. Those who miss the last train must take the official shuttle bus, which operates at 45-minute intervals (1:45am, 2:30am, 3:15am, 4:00am, 4:45 am, or 5:30am). Participants unable to catch the last shuttle must take the MTR, the first one being at 6:03am

6. External support
Participants are reminded that pacing is not allowed. External support is permitted only at Checkpoints and Central Pier. Failure to comply with these rules may result in a time penalty or disqualification at the discretion of the Race Director.
7. Bag drop services
Free bag drop services will be provided to all participants. Drop bags and mid-race bags (for Warrior and One Go participants only) will be collected at the start. All drop bags will be sent to the finish points. Warrior and One Go participants will have their mid-race bags collected at the Mui Wo Checkpoint.

4.公共接駁交通工具要求
參賽者必須使用以下公共交通接駁各路線:

第2段至第3段: 梅窩碼頭至中環碼頭 - 新渡輪。
第3段至第4段: 太古至藍田 - 地鐵* (適用於One Go 參賽者)或大會提供的穿梭巴士服務。
*One Go 參賽者必需乘搭地鐵過海。地鐵尾班列車為凌晨00時43分。不能趕及乘搭尾班列車的參賽者必須乘搭大會提供的穿梭巴,班次為45分鐘一班 (凌晨1時45分、2時30分、3時15分、4時正、4時45分 或 5時30分)。參賽者未能趕及最後一班穿梭巴必須乘搭地鐵,首班列車時間為早上6時03分。
5. 強制裝備

6. 外部支援
不允許有配速員。外部支援只限於在檢查站內及中環碼頭。違規者會導致加時處分或被取消資格,最終裁決由賽事總監決定。
7. 寄存行李服務
大會將提供免費寄存行李服務給所有參賽者。
行李及中繼包 (只適用於Warrior and One Go participants) 可在起點寄存。所有行李將依據參賽者參加的組別送到相關的終點。Warrior and One Go 參賽者的中繼包將會送到梅窩檢查站。

4 Trails Ultra Loop, also known as 4TUL was founded in 2020. This 189km loop starts and ends at Tai Mo Shan, with 95% of the route falling within Hong Kong's four major trails: the MacLehose Trail, Wilson Trail, Hong Kong Trail, and Lantau Trail. The loop is connected by public transportation and the sections to be completed on foot cover 146km.
The 1st edition of 4TUL was a 189km One Go challenge, with about 30 participants attempting it.
Starting from the 2nd edition, 4TUL evolved into a trail running race. In addition to the 189km One Go challenge, the event included races ranging from one section to four consecutive sections, as well as team challenges.
The 3rd edition introduced slight modifications to the original course while retaining its core concept of connection to Hong Kong's four major trails. The longest running distance was extended to 170km and the event featured four race categories: 100M Extreme, 100K Warrior, 50K Rocker, and 25K Speedster.
After a 3-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the 4th edition of 4TUL was held as a physical race in 2024. While the 4TUL loop remained the same, the route direction was reversed to anti-clockwise. The original 146km "One Go" route made a comeback, alongside the 100km Warrior and 66km Half Loop distances.
The 5th edition is divided into two parts. Part 1 took place in March 2025, offering distances of 27km and 45km. Part 2 is scheduled for October 2025, featuring three distances. The overall distance has been slightly reduced due to a reroute that avoids the Fan Lau section in Lantau.

第一屆 4TUL 為一次性完成189公里個人挑戰,總參加人數約為30人。
由第二屆開始, 4TUL 演變為越野賽事, 除了189公里One Go 挑戰,還增加一到四段分開完成及隊際接力的組別。
第三屆 4TUL 在原賽道上進行了輕微調整,但仍然保留以香港4條主徑作為比賽賽道的概念。賽事距離最長延長到170公里 (跑步距離),賽事分為100M Extreme、100K Warrior、50K Rocker 及 25K Speedster 共4個組別 。
經過3年的全球大流行,第四屆4TUL 終於可在2024年以實體賽事形式舉辦,意味參賽者可以享受一起在這大環形路線上作賽。賽事保留環形路線設計,但以逆時針方向進行。原146公里路線在這屆回歸,另設100公里 Warrior 及 66公里 Half Loop 兩個組別距離。
第五屆分為兩部分。第一部分在2025年3月舉辦,共提供27公里及45公里組別。第二部分定於2025年10月舉辦,共三個組別選擇。三個組別的距離因要被開分流路段而需要改道進行,故此總體距離均稍微減少。

4TUL started as my personal challenge in 2020, it then evolved as an event open to public for the same challenge. In 2021, 4TUL became a trail running race. 4TUL Extreme, 100 miles version, was introduced in 2023. In 2024,the 4TUL story continues, the race will be doing the loop in reverse (anti-clockwise).

As an enthusiastic newcomer to ultra running, I originally signed up to complete the 4-in-a-Row format only. However, after running each of the sections and loving the route, I knew I wanted to take on the full One-Go Challenge. I immediately signed up as a One Go Participant, started looking into ferry timetables and planning the logistics… It was my first time running more than 50KM in one go and my first time running solo at night, and I loved the whole experience and challenge. I can’t wait to sign up again for the 3rd Edition!
